PAST  EVENTS

~ THE BEGINNING ~

The origins of our movement to rescue, restore and sail classic dinghies began in 2007 at Chelsea YC. The community of Chelsea were holding several events to celebrate the centenary of the railway station and the yacht club decided to invite classes that had once sailed there but had long since disappeared (see poster on the left.)  The event was organised by the Chelsea YC committe, which included Stephen Fankhauser, an old Skate sailor who later restored the 12 Sq. Metre Sharpie "Cheyenne". For the first time in decades Skates, Vee Jays, a Payne-Mortlock Canoe and other classic classes covered the beach in front of the club. The event was a great success and revived interest in these boats.

In 2011 Mordialloc YC decided to hold a regatta for wooden dinghies in April at the end of the sailing season and to make it an annual event (see photo on the right.) The initial regatta was very popular and the event was held again in 2012 and 2013. One of the most interesting boats was Finn number 27, which was the boat that Paul Elvstrom won the Gold medal with in the 1956 Olympics.

At the 2013 regatta some old Vee Jay and Skate sailors from Chelsea met Andrew Chapman from Inverloch and together decided to start a classic dinghy movement. Andrew was keen to hold a regatta at Inverloch on the Australia Day Long Weekend to revive, in a new form, the historic Inverloch Regatta with a focus on classic wooden dinghies. We decided that Inverloch was an ideal place because of its historical connection to the Moth, its flat, sheltered water and because it is a country venue it would be attractive as a destination for a holiday weekend regatta. Andrew and his wife Marion then planned and organised the first Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta. At the first regatta some boats turned up from Cairn Curran and began that club's involvement with classic dinghies.

Each season the movement grows larger and we now have boats coming from NSW, the  ACT and there is growing interest in SA and Tasmania.  We are also gathering and compiling information on the history of classes that were lost to history.

We hope to see a group of enthusiasts form a movement for classic catamarans.

Classic Dinghy Classes Invitation
Ballaarat YC  18 March 2017

Ballaarat Yacht Club invited classic dinghy classes to Lake Wendouree on Saturday the 18th of March to join the club fleet and the Ballarat Berties, an annual event for Lightweight Sharpies. The modern Sharpies were joined by two of their ancestors, 12 sq. Metre (Heavyweight) Sharpies "Zena" and "Cheyenne". Sailfish and other classic dinghies came from around Victoria and as far away as Narrabeen in NSW. A drifter on a glassy lake made a great static display.     (Photos below courtesy of Brian Canny and Sharon Wood)
